A Local Decision Making (LDM) agreement signed in Maningrida this week provides pathways for the community to set priorities that advance cultural, social, economic, education development in the region in partnership with the NT Government.
This signing represents the 15th LDM agreement across the Territory and will facilitate new working relationships to support self-determination of local Aboriginal communities.
The Agreement - which has been developed through an extensive consultation process led by the Dhukurrdji Development Corporation that represents the Kunibidji people of Maningrida and neighbouring clan groups - identifies ten strategic priorities, including agency over plans to support people with disabilities.
This addition, at the community's request, follows the selection of Maningrida as the site of one of two national trials by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The trial will investigate a shift from the current underutilisation of individualised packages to exploring options to create efficiencies and improve accessibility of services. NDIA has agreed to be a party to the Agreement, with the trial to be community-led in partnership with the NT Government.
The newly established Homeland School Company (HSC) has also agreed to be a party to the Agreement, and will play a critical role in strengthening cultural knowledge within the education system in partnership with community leaders. This is an existing priority within the Agreement.
Implementation of strategic priorities have already commenced with the establishment of the Murnun Men's Shed and Women's Cultural Hub with Mala'la Health Service Aboriginal Corporation; and the Nja-marleya Cultural Leaders and Justice Group.
Other partners to the LDM include; Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation, Maningrida Progress Association, Northern Land Council, West Arnhem Regional Council, and the National Indigenous Australians Agency.
