- State Government delivers extra funds for Kununurra Aquatic and Leisure Centre project
- $4.9 million extra in 2024-25 builds on previous election commitment of $6 million
- New eight-lane 25-metre pool, plus new leisure pool, will double existing water space
The Cook Government is splashing an extra $4.9 million in funding towards a project to redevelop the Kununurra Aquatic and Leisure Centre that will double the existing water space.
An eight-lane 25-metre pool will replace the existing six-lane 25-metre pool and there will be a new leisure program pool.
The State Government had already put $6 million towards the project as a 2021 State Election commitment, while the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley has contributed just over $3 million, and the Department of Communities has put in $170,000 via a Changing Places grant.
As well as the new eight-lane 25-metre pool, the redevelopment includes a dedicated tots pool, upgraded changerooms to meet disability access requirements and a covered barbecue area.
Works are expected to happen in 2024.
These new facilities will complement the $3.2 million water playground that opened in 2022.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:
"In a place like Kununurra, having a good pool that's big enough for the local population is very important. I'm proud the Cook Government is showing its commitment to supporting the Kununurra Aquatic and Leisure project through an additional $4.9 million investment.
"I know the expansion of the pool to eight lanes and the addition of a leisure pool will be welcomed by the community who really value the much-used facility as a community asset.
"In one of the hottest parts of the State, having a covered area for barbecuing is also a must.
"Of course, swimming is synonymous with living in Western Australia. So, ensuring people have access to aquatics facilities for activities from lessons to training is a priority."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:
"I am absolutely delighted to hear that the Cook Government is funding the redevelopment of the Kununurra Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
"During the hot summer months the pool is the most popular place in town so doubling the water space is very welcome news indeed."
