  • Planning work expected to lay foundation for precinct-level improvement of infrastructure and amenities for tourism and local residents
  • Refreshed vision for the town to be led by partnership between the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, MG Corporation, the East Kimberley Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Kimberley Development Commission

Regional Development Minister Don Punch announced a $327,500 commitment today to develop a revitalisation plan for Kununurra Town Centre, to help modernise a key gateway destination into Western Australia and the Kimberley.

The funding will be used to engage the Kununurra community on a new vision for their town, addressing a consistent desire expressed by the community for a more welcoming, vibrant and attractive town centre for residents, businesses and visitors.

The announcement was made this afternoon at a roundtable in Kununurra with key stakeholders from the local community.

The Kununurra Collaboration will be formed to lead the project - a new partnership among the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, MG Corporation representing the Miriwoong people, the East Kimberley Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Kimberley Development Commission.

The group will work together to develop options and consult with the community, to deliver a plan for a revitalised town centre.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Don Punch:

"Kununurra has a fascinating history and a strong community, as well as a vital position as one of only two major land-based gateways into our State.

"It's important that the town centre is welcoming for visitors, reflects the culture and identity of the community, and offers a safe and engaging environment for everybody.

"I was hugely impressed by community's decision to come together behind this revitalisation effort, and I would like to thank Kimberley local member Divina D'Anna for her advocacy on this issue.

"We've seen it work in Broome and other towns, and we will see this project deliver economic and social benefits to Kununurra as well."

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:

"I have been involved in many discussions with community leaders as to how the State Government might assist in bringing vibrancy back to Kununurra's town centre.

"I would like to thank the Cook Government for funding this business case, the first major step towards developing a refreshed vision for the town.

"The Kununurra Collaboration is a fantastic partnership, and I look forward to working with them to ensure Kununurra is the showcase of Kimberley culture and community that it deserves to be."
