Labor And Crossbench Allies Vote Down CFMEU Inquiry

Liberal Party Victoria

Labor and its crossbench allies have voted down a motion to set up a Parliamentary inquiry into allegations of corruption and misconduct by the construction division of the CFMEU.

For a decade under Labor, illegal and thuggish behaviour has been allowed to occur by the CFMEU on taxpayer funded construction projects, which has contributed to at least $40 billion in cost blowouts.

After refusing to call a Royal Commission, Premier Jacinta Allan's Labor Government has now voted down a motion by the Liberals and Nationals which would have set up a Select Committee to inquire and report on the allegations.

This refusal follows Labor voting down new laws introduced by the Victorian Liberals and Nationals that would've prevented organised criminals from being employed on taxpayer funded major projects.

The Victorian Liberals and Nationals will never tolerate misconduct on construction sites as Labor has for the past decade and a future Pesutto Government will establishConstruction Enforcement Victoria to enforce a reinstated Code of Practice for the Building and Construction industry.

Leader of the Opposition, John Pesutto, said: "By voting down this inquiry, Premier Jacinta Allan has yet again failed a test of leadership as she continues to protect the CFMEU from any real scrutiny. Only a government I lead will take strong action and reinstate a Code of Practice for the Building and Construction industry, overseen by an independent watchdog.

"Victorians need confidence that construction sites aren't hives of illegal and thuggish behaviour and they deserve to know why they are paying over $40 billion in cost blowouts across major projects.

"Labor cannot manage money, cannot be trusted to clean up construction work sites and Victorians are paying the price."

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Georgie Crozier, said: "In joining with their allies on the crossbench, Labor has shown they are one and the same with the CFMEU.

"Only a proper inquiry will uncover the full extent of CFMEU corruption in Victoria and the complicity of the Allan Labor Government in protecting it."
