Labor Member for Bass Janie Finlay has spectacularly broken ranks against embattled Labor Leader Rebecca White.
Ms Finlay has expressed opposition to the stadium in an ill-conceived media release only weeks after she voted to support it through the Project Of State Significance.
Minister for Stadia and Events, Nic Street, labelled this the height of hypocrisy and showed Labor truly stand for nothing.
"When you try and stand for everything, you stand for nothing at all," Minister Street said.
"Ms Fliplay was an eager participant in the POSS vote and has now demonstrated she is more wishy-washy than her beleaguered "leader".
"Now, this rogue Labor member has publicly wedged her leader as her actions speak louder than her words.
"As if Labor's division couldn't get any wider, Josh Willie the wannabe Member for Clark and the unable-to-apologise Shane Broad, further undermined the future of the stadium and Labor's position at today's Public Accounts Committee.
"Tasmanians have every right to be confused as to what Labor's position is on the stadium, I don't even think Labor could tell you. What does Ms White stand for?"
Labor's 'No' campaign has included:
- Ms White saying "Tasmanian Labor will continue to…stand against the stadium." (13/5/23);
- Labor MPs attaching 'No Stadium' stickers to their parliamentary vehicles;
- Tasmanian Labor HQ running a 'Stop the Stadium' online petition (it's still there!); and
- At least one Labor MP using their office to support the Launceston 'No Stadium' rally on 27 August (but no-one turned up to it).
"Ms White is either for the stadium, or she is against it. Which is it?" he said.
"How can Tasmanians trust Labor when they can't get it straight on something so obvious?"
