Labor Lies Do Nothing For Racing

Guy Barnett, Minister for Racing

Labor racing spokesperson Luke Edmunds is either ignorant of the existing regulatory framework, or his statement today is simply deliberately misleading.

Stating that the Minister for Racing has the power to "stand down" participants is a lie.

It's cheap politicking from Mr Edmunds and Labor, proving they have absolutely nothing new to offer Tasmanians, just more relentless negativity.

Rather than deliberately misleading Tasmanians, Mr Edmunds should have been announcing his party's support for the biggest integrity reforms in Tasmanian racing history.

I know that we need a modern fit for purpose system of integrity for the racing industry.

That's why we have introduced our new Racing Regulation and Integrity Bills as soon as we could - and we expect to be debating them this week.

If we are to believe Labor actually cares about the industry, Mr Edmunds should have been showing some leadership and announcing Labor will be voting for our Bills.

I want to rebuild faith and restore trust in the industry - and that's what this legislation will do.

Unlike Labor, constantly trying to pre-empt processes, we will wait for the full report from the independent stewards panel due on 30 June.
