Labor's Teacher Shortage Crisis Continues To Worsen

Liberal Party Victoria

The high-quality education Victorian students deserve continues to be put at riskas a new survey reveals the majority of public school teachers do not intend to remain in the profession for their entire career.

A Monash University survey has found just three in 10 teachers intend on remaining in the public school system until retirement, and 40 per cent of teachers are actively considering leaving the sector.

This survey comes as 1,500 teaching positions across Victoria remain unfilled today, almost double the 800 vacancies at the beginning of the 2024 school year.

Furthermore, the2022 Teacher Supply and Demand Report revealed Victoria's teacher attrition rate grew by almost 20 per cent between 2021 and 2022.

The Supply and Demand Report also projects a shortfall of more than 5,600 secondary school teachers by 2028.

Shadow Minister for Early Childhood and Education, Jess Wilson, said: "Labor's failure to address Victoria's teacher shortage crisis is robbing students of the high-quality education they deserve.

"No student can achieve their best learning in a doubled-up classroom or by being sent home at lunch because Labor cannot manage our teaching workforce.

"The Allan Labor Government claims to have invested $1.6 billion since 2019 to reverse their teacher shortage crisis but we're yet to see the results and today's survey suggests these interventions are not helping to solve the problem.

"Victoria needs a comprehensive plan to address the fundamental causes of Victoria's teacher shortage crisis and to ensure teaching is an attractive and fulfilling career choice.

"Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage our education system and Victorians are paying the price."
