Myer's decision to cancel its iconic Christmas windows unveiling event reflects a community that no longer feels safe or protected in Melbourne's CBD.
In 2015, the Victorian Labor Government removed the powers for police to move on people to ensure the community has safe passage to work, home or other legal activity.
For a decade, the decision has left Victoria Police with one arm tied behind its back and emboldened those seeking to cause disruption and bring our city to a standstill.
Shadow Minister for Police, Brad Battin, said: "Instead of deflecting blame for this chaos on the streets of Melbourne, Labor needs to admit this is a direct result of its own weakening of Victoria's move-on laws.
"Under the Allan Labor Government and their weak laws, a threat of a protest has stopped the unveiling event for one of the longest and happiest family traditions in Melbourne which attracts millions who support the local economy.
"The solution is clear – reinstate Victoria's move-on laws and send a clear signal that no one has the right to hold Melbourne hostage."
