More than 2000 rowers from across the country have descended on Lake Barrington for the 2025 Australian Rowing Championships.
Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan, said it was the largest number of competitors in the event's history and would provide a massive boost to our regional areas.
"The event was last held at Lake Barrington in 2021. More than 3750 interstate visitors attended, and 1500 Tasmanians from across the state. That's a major injection to the area," Minister Duigan said.
"That's why the Tasmanian Government was proud to support this event again with $1.3 million.
"This year's championships will see more than 2,120 rowers, from secondary school students to Olympians and Paralympians, participating in an inclusive seven-day event program.
"We are pleased to share the world-standard facilities of Lake Barrington International Rowing Course with you, along with our quality tourism, food and hospitality experiences.
"Tasmania is committed to delivering world-class sporting events through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future. Our Government values the partnership with Rowing Australia and the opportunity to host events like the Australian Rowing Championships."
Rowing Australia are expecting around 6250 interstate visitors who will stay for an average of eight nights, providing a return an injection of around $9 million to the Tasmanian economy.
Minister Duigan said Tasmania is a proud rowing state, with this an event he knows all too well.
"It seems like just yesterday my Schoolboy Coxed Four team took out the National Championship here in 1987," Minister Duigan said.
"I know firsthand with the incredible talent on display, we can expect fierce competition, renewed rivalries, new friendships, exceptional sportsmanship, extraordinary passion and exhilarating heats and finals on the lake.
"And as our athletes leave their all on the water, the coaches, supporters and volunteers will be playing a just as important role, making this a truly community-driven event. The championships couldn't happen without them and they have our thanks."
The event runs until Sunday.
