Lake Burley Griffin to welcome new fish friends

The National Capital Authority (NCA) will today release thousands of Murray Cod fingerlings into Lake Burley Griffin to support the lake's ecosystem and opportunities for recreational fishing.

Almost forty-four-thousand Murray Cod fingerlings will be released at five locations as part of the Lake Burley Griffin Fish Restocking Program, which has operated since 1964 when the lake was created.

Native fish compete with introduced species such as European Carp and Redfin and play an important role in keeping the lake healthy by cycling nutrients like carbon and nitrogen and maintaining productive food webs.

The fingerlings will reach the legal-size limit of 60 centimetres in about five years and have the potential to grow to more than one metre long and weigh over 20 kilograms, contributing to future recreational fishing opportunities on Lake Burley Griffin.
