Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King, alongside Deputy Shire President Trish Cook, unveiled a commemorative plaque, marking the significant investment in one of the shire's premier tourism destinations.
The Lake Leschenaultia Visitor Improvement Project aimed to elevate the visitor experience and improve the facility's access and safety management.
With the lake attracting over 14,000 campers and approximately 80,000 visitors each year, this project will strengthen tourism and boost the local economy.
Invited guests and stakeholders gathered to celebrate the finalisation of the project, which represents a total investment of almost $450,000.
This included a grant of more than $218,000 from the Australian Government, with the remaining funding of almost $228,000 contributed by the shire's capital works program.
The completed works have introduced a range of new features and upgrades, including:
- Creation of a designated swimming-only area protected by commercial buoys, ensuring a safer environment for swimmers by excluding personal watercraft from the area.
- Installation of vehicle counters at the entry and exit points, providing the shire with valuable data to assist in risk management and future planning.
- Automated exit gates and a CCTV system, enhancing security and safety at the park's main entrance. The gates, equipped with a battery backup, also ensure safe and convenient after-hours access, especially during emergencies.
- Solar photovoltaic system installation, which reduces the lake's dependence on fossil fuels and supports the shire's environmental sustainability goals.
- A new shaded outdoor dining area featuring colourful interpretive signage, including bird artwork by renowned artist Brenton See, and information panels that provide insights into the Aboriginal Six Seasons and the history of Lake Leschenaultia.
- Replacement and new picnic shelters, offering all-weather protection and beautiful views over the lake, with one shelter serving as a crucial 'shelter in place' area during bushfire emergencies.
- A new 200-square-metre nature playground, designed with natural elements and train-based play features that connect with the lake's historical significance as a water source for steam trains over 100 years ago.
Lake Leschenaultia is open year-round to visitors.
