Lake Upgrade Welcomed

Orange Council

Orange Mayor Tony Mileto has welcomed the completion of the $1.3 million upgrade of recreational facilities at Lake Canobolas as a major boost for both local families and visitors to the region.

The multi-faceted upgrade of Orange's most popular recreation spot began in June 2023 and has finished with the completion of a floating boardwalk.

The upgrade was officially opened at a ceremony today attended by:

  • NSW MLC Mr Stephen Lawrence
  • Mayor Tony Mileto
  • Member for Orange Phil Donato

The $1.3 million upgrade, funded by the NSW Government, Orange City Council and Cadia Valley Operations, includes a string of projects which are aimed at improving access to the water and recreation areas for all community members.

"This upgrade of Lake Canobolas has already made what's already a hugely popular spot for Orange families even more attractive," Cr Mileto said. "It's so important that this beautiful location can now be enjoyed by everyone because

it's become much more accessible. Whether it's a shared path, a playground, a toilet or the water of the lake itself, these accessibility upgrades can make all the difference."

"The Council is pleased to be working in partnership with the NSW Government to deliver this upgrade."

Together with the NSW Government, Orange City Council is delivering infrastructure that is essential for communities, increasing access to water for recreation across the state. The NSW Government is contributing $1 million to the Lake Canobolas Activation and

improvement works project.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said the NSW Government has contributed $1.344 million towards the lake upgrade though the Places to Swim Program and the Stronger Country Communities fund.

"I'm thrilled to see Lake Canobolas receive an accessibility and recreational upgrade to provide improved open space infrastructure for the local community to unwind, relax and play," Mr Scully said.

"Improving water access with new expanded open space infrastructure for inland cities like Orange is vital for the local community as it continues to grow."

Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said it's great to see the accessible pathways and shade shelters complete in time for summer holidays.

"The new accessible pathways and shade shelters will ensure that family and friends visiting the Orange region will have a new place to come together and connect in nature," Minister Moriarty said.

"The NSW Government is committed to supporting regional community infrastructure upgrades that improve accessibility and promote inclusion and wellbeing."

Places to Swim is connecting people to water in places that need it the most, creating better access to get in, on and around inland waterways across NSW through a $16.7 million commitment to high quality open space.
