Restoration projects are a highlight of the second stage of the Tasmanian Government's Landcare Action Grants.
Eleven projects will share in $160,621 as part of this second stage of funding, with $463,500 in total being allocated over the duration of the Landcare Action Grants between 2023-2025.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, said the grants support restoration projects across the State, with a focus on riparian and wetland rehabilitation, farm dam enhancement, fencing to protect residual vegetation, weed control, improving landscape connectivity, and educational activities for the broader Tasmanian community.
"As well as $463,500 in grant funding,these grants have leveraged over $600,000 worth of in-kind support making them an important catalyst for community action," Minister Howlett said.
"Some of the projects in this second stage include waterway and vegetation protection at Upper Stowport, neighbourhood gorse control at Petcheys Bay and farm dam enhancements at Sassafras, Preston and South Preston.
"These important projects will lead to the planting of about 1,300 trees, 37 hectares of weeding, 24 new off-stream watering points and 12 kilometres of fencing being installed across the State.
The projects are expected to be finalised by mid next year.
Peter Stronach, Landcare Tasmania CEO, said the various projects funded through this Tasmanian government supported grant program are an important catalyst for on-ground community action.
"The Landcare community contributes holistic benefits to Tasmania by improving catchment health, landscape connectivity and better conditions for primary production," Mr Stronach said.
"These grants are far-reaching across the State, supporting various sized projects, and are an important enabler for environmental landscape change and restoration."
The Tasmanian Government is investing and working in partnership with communities as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, to protect our natural assets.
The Tasmanian Government is investing more than $1.865 million over three years from 2024-25 towards Landcare's programs and initiatives.
This includes $900,000 over three years towards expansion of the successful Landcare Action Grants program.
The Program was initially established to provide grant opportunities involving co-investment with farmers, Landcare, and other community organisations on practical on ground works for sustainable agriculture and river care activities.
