Landmark Deal For Territory Public School Teachers

NT Government

The Lawler Labor Government is continuing to invest in getting Territory students work ready by securing a wages agreement with Territory public school teachers.

The Australian Education Union Northern Territory has today agreed in principle to a new enterprise agreement that will deliver a salary increase of about 13% over the next three years, with all classroom teachers moving up an increment point.

The new enterprise agreement will provide more investment in Territory teachers so they can continue their work to get Territory students ready to enter the workforce. It will also address issues of turnover to attract and secure more experienced teachers in the Territory for the long term.

This deal is in addition to the implementation of the secondary education review recommendations, which includes:

• a new model to support students with disability

• recruiting more Aboriginal staff in schools

• expanding bilingual education provision

• expanding subject offerings to engage students

• investing in school based engagement programs

• enabling more professional development opportunities

• improving ICT in schools to support student learning

Teachers will also be provided more support to become permanent, if they wish to do so. The Department will actively monitor schools to ensure support is provided where it is needed to assist eligible teachers to become permanent.

Quotes attributed to Chief Minister, Eva Lawler:

"This investment in our teachers is an investment in the education of Territory children.

"We are investing in the future of the Territory - this deal will also support the attraction and retention of quality teachers in the Territory."

Quotes attributed to Minister for Mining, Mark Monaghan:

"Teachers do the work in educating our Territory children to have the best chance in life - that is why we have come to the table with this landmark pay rise for teachers."
