Large Grass Fire At Tennant Creek

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) responded to a large grassfire along Peko Road in Tennant Creek on Tuesday 27 August.

Around 6.40am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports of a grass fire on the northeastern side of Peko Road near Tennant Creek. The fire was moving in a northwest direction along Peko Road.

The NTFRS firefighting response comprised a crew of five who worked diligently across a large area in order to protect multiple buildings and properties. Bushfires NT Tennant Creek members provided an additional two vehicles and four volunteers to assist with the firefighting response.

The fire burnt an estimated 1500 hectares, with firefighting efforts concluding around 2.00am on 28 August.

NTFRS Officer in Charge of Tennant Creek Fire Station David Cowling said, "I would like to acknowledge and commend the Tennant Creek crew, which includes volunteers and part-time members, along with the Bushfires NT members, who worked in very hot and challenging conditions to contain this fire.

"Earlier mitigation conducted by landholders greatly assisted with the containment of the fire, and certainly prevented any further loss of property. This exemplifies the importance of mitigation strategies and how crucial, their implementation can be.

"NTFRS is reminding all Territorians to stay vigilant this fire season."
