Last call for local artists to submit a green wedge artwork
24 April 2019
There's still time for local established and emerging artists to share your interpretation of our precious Green Wedge.
The Shire's Green Wedge Paint Outs and Exhibition are returning to the Peninsula in 2019 furthering Council's efforts to protect areas of National, State and local conservation significance and habitat value.
Artists are invited to submit a Green Wedge inspired artwork to be considered for exhibition across the Peninsula with displays at the Shire Council Chamber in Rosebud, Oak Hill Gallery and Merricks House Art Gallery at Merricks General Wine Store.
Applications to submit an artwork close 5pm on Friday 3 May 2019.
Three bursaries will be awarded for Green Wedge exhibiting artists including:
- $1,000 Most Inspiring Award
- $500 Green Award
- $500 Encouragement Award.
Well-known local artist Jennifer Riddle and senior arts educator Colin Johnson will each mentor a guided Paint Out for anyone interested in furthering their drawing and painting skills. Paint Outs will be held in April and hosted by the Shire.
Shire Mayor Cr David Gill said Council is taking a multidimensional approach to protect the Peninsula's Green Wedge areas, "we're calling on the community to help showcase the significance of our Green Wedge land and why we must all work together to preserve it.
"Our Green Wedge requires careful planning and management to protect its values for the long term".
Conservation policies for the Peninsula's rural Green Wedge area were first introduced by the State Government more than 40 years ago and the special role and character of the Mornington Peninsula Green Wedge continues to be highly valued by both the local community and the wider population of Melbourne.
"I look forward to seeing the breadth of interpretation of the Green Wedge in this year's paint out".
"With display locations at Rosebud and Merricks, the public have more opportunity to see the wonderful work of our great Peninsula artists" Cr Gill concluded.
Last year the Shire held its inaugural exhibition, which was well received with 100 artists registered and two fully booked guided paint outs.
Submissions will be judged by a Shire panel and awards announced in June.
