The Allan Labor Government is making significant progress on the landmark $1.1 billion Frankston Hospital redevelopment, with the project in its final year of major construction and the last tower crane now dismantled.
This marks another major milestone as the project - the largest ever health infrastructure investment in Melbourne's south east - nears completion.
The first tower crane was installed on site in March 2023 and at the peak of construction, four tower cranes were in use - all four cranes were fully electric, running solely on renewable energy.
The construction workforce is now at its peak with 900 people on site - with work underway on the tower's exterior, installing a helipad on the roof to provide critical emergency care, faster. Inside, works continue to progress, with health care services being fitted out level by level.
The new clinical services tower will house a new inpatient services operating theatre suite, women's and children's services, cancer services and new acute mental health facilities, delivering more patient care.
With capacity to treat 35,000 more patients each year once fully operational, the new building will help to cut wait times and alleviate pressure off other hospitals in the area.
The redevelopment is bringing new spaces for mental health and oncology services to the Peninsula, with 130 more beds and 15 new operating theatres.
Construction of the emergency department's new paediatric zone and mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub is also well underway, with staff and patients already benefiting from a newly opened 13-bed short stay unit.
The new short stay unit will cater for patients requiring treatment and monitoring for less than 24 hours - easing pressure on hardworking staff by assisting with patient flow and reducing patient wait times.
With more families choosing to make the south-east home, the redevelopment will offer more speciality services for women and children - with new maternity, obstetrics and paediatric wards, a women's clinic and a special care nursery to support babies in their critical first weeks and months.
