Latrobe City Council is proud to host this year's Gippsland New Energy Conference (GNEC), where opportunities, challenges and innovations will be explored to drive transition into a sustainable future.
The GNEC is the largest regionally led energy conference where key leaders, speakers and facilitators gather to discuss various aspects of renewable energy and energy transition. The Conference endeavours to elevate the region's standing as a proactive and visionary centre for renewable energy initiatives.
Mayor of Latrobe City Council, Councillor Darren Howe, said he's proud that Latrobe City is hosting this year's GNEC.
"As Victoria's most heavily impacted and transitioning region, I am looking forward to attending the GNEC where we will gather with leaders and industry experts providing a platform to discuss and advocate for a greater, cleaner future for all," said the Mayor.
"As host of this year's conference, we view this as a prime opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to an equitable transition towards a new energy future for the region. Our Transition Plan underscores our priority to move Latrobe City towards a bigger and brighter future, while also transitioning to support local jobs.
"We all have a role to play in transitioning to a more sustainable future. Latrobe City is doing its part by moving towards Net Zero emissions through key projects such as the biogas renewable energy initiative, geothermal technology at our pools and leisure centres, solar panel installations across major buildings, and LED lighting replacements.
"Attendees will have the opportunity to see these projects firsthand with tours of the biogas renewable energy project at the Hyland Landfill and the geothermal technology at the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre as part of the conference."
The estimated economic benefit of the event to Latrobe City is approximately $650,000, combining both direct and indirect impacts on the community. This includes revenue generated from visitor travel and overnight stays in the region.
The GNEC is being held from 3 to 4 September 2024 at the Gippsland Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon. The event will host keynote speakers, Q&A discussion panels, and a free community expo including food stalls and entertainment.
