A man has been charged over an alleged assault and house fire in the state's south.
About 11.45pm on Friday (7 March 2025), officers attached to Murray River Police District were patrolling Kaitlers Road, Lavington, when they noticed smoke coming from a house on the same street.
Officers immediately attended the scene and located a fire within the premises, before Fire and Rescue NSW were called.
The fire was extinguished a short time after; however, the house was destroyed.
Police were told a 34-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by a 28-year-old man, who is known to her, at the premises before the house caught alight.
There were no injuries reported due to this incident; however, the bodies of three dogs were found sinside after the fire was extinguished.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the incident commenced.
Following inquiries, about 4.30pm yesterday (Saturday 8 March 2025), police arrested the 28-year-old man on Goolagar Crescent, Springdale Heights.
He was taken to Albury Police Station and charged with six offences,
• Assault occasioning actual bodily harm
• Breach AVO (two counts)
• Intimidation
• Destroy property by fire, and
• Possess prohibited drug
He was refused bail to appear before Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Sunday 9 March 2025).
