Queensland Police Service (QPS) and other Emergency Services personnel have joined forces to carry the Law Enforcement Torch from the shores of Brisbane, throughout Queensland in the lead up to the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games.
The games kick off this Saturday, October 8 and this year its Queensland’s turn to host a multitude of events ranging from golf to crossfit and everything in between at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) started in 1981 by USA Chief Richard La Munyon who saw a need and had a vision to showcase the abilities of people with an intellectual disability. LETR aims to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics and through partnering with the Special Olympics is able to provide opportunities for athletes to empower and transform themselves.
On Monday, October 3 a contingency of law enforcement officers and emergency services personnel left Brisbane for the commencement of the torch run. The LETR team left Southbank, Brisbane and travelled to Springfield.
On Tuesday, October 4 the team headed to Esk Police Station and ran to Esk Primary School, before arriving at Kingaroy Police Station and running to Kingaroy Primary and Special School.
Today, Wednesday October 5 the team started at Eidsvold Police Station and ran to the State School before travelling to Bundaberg, where they visited the police station and Bundaberg Special School.
Thursday, October 6 they will commence their run from the Maryborough Police Station to the Maryborough Special School before heading to Gympie Police Station and proceeding to the Gympie Special School. Next stop is Caloundra Happy Valley Park.
On Saturday, October 8 the LETR team will arrive at the Caloundra Air Museum. That evening they will run into the opening ceremony, where the lighting of the cauldron at the Sunshine Coast Stadium will signify the official opening of the games.
The LETR team and competitors of the games would like to invite and encourage all members of the public and Sunshine Coast residents to attend this free event and show their support.
