A significant project has come to fruition for Leeton Shire Council, following the construction of a new landfill trench at the Leeton Landfill & Recycling Centre.
The tender for the construction of the new cell was awarded to Boots Civil and accepted by Council at its November Ordinary Council Meeting in 2023 for a contracted price of $428,535.32 (inclusive of GST).
The new cell is 206m in length and 29m in width, equating to a volume of approximately 37,000m3. Construction was initiated due to the current trench approaching capacity. It was delivered in full in September 2024 and on budget.
Unlike previous cells, the new one is projected to last 35% longer due to the recent introduction of the FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) service.
The uptake of FOGO is providing immense benefits to Leeton Shire residents in the long term, according to Leeton Shire Mayor Cr George Weston.
"The new three bin system enables us to reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill trench by turning it into high-quality compost for use in our community and our parks and gardens.
"With less waste going to the tip, the frequency of constructing these expensive trenches decreases which not only allows us extend the life of the landfill but also saves ratepayers money in the long-term," he said.
