The Leeton Shire Youth Council held its first meeting in 2024 on 26 February. Eight (8) students were in attendance, representing their respective schools St Francis College, Yanco Agricultural High School and Leeton High School.
The purpose of the first meeting in 2024 was to workshop activities for Youth Week 2024 in April and debate the proposed naming of the grandstand at Leeton No 1 Oval; a real agenda item that was tabled at the Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday, 28 February.
Portfolio Lead for Youth, Cr Sandra Nardi, said she was pleased to see the students participate in a lively debate.
"The students' input on the proposed grandstand naming was very valuable in anticipation of the Ordinary Council Meeting held on Wednesday. We were also delighted to have Youth Councillor Chelsea Clark attend the meeting to brief the rest of the councillors on the outcome of their debate," she said.
Mayor Cr Tony Reneker, who was joined by Cr George Weston and Cr Sandra Nardi, said he continues to be impressed by the dedication and insight of the Youth Council members.
"Their perspectives bring fresh energy to the forefront of our local governance. Embracing their input not only ensures a vibrant future for our community but also fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment among our youth," he said.
The Youth Council has been established in an effort to provide advice to Leeton Shire Council and develop young leaders in an inclusive space where all views are respected as well as building awareness of local councils and constructive engagement as citizens.
The Leeton Shire Youth Council will meet five times in 2024 with the next meeting scheduled for Monday, 8 April.
