- The program has delivered a number of independent living projects across regional WA
Leonora's independent living village Ageing in Place was officially opened today by Regional Development Minister Don Punch at an event attended by the Shire of Leonora council and the local community.
The Ageing in Place project has delivered eight modern, independent living units complete with adjoining private courtyards, located in the centre of Leonora.
The village style development also features a community hall, communal gardens and barbeque facilities.
The design integrates best practice ageing in place principles, supporting residents to live independently in a community village setting.
The addition of the community hall will enable both community members and residents to socialise and enjoy a range of senior programs, events and activities, while accessing local and visiting support services.
The project was funded through a $3.5 million allocation from the State Government's Regional Aged Accommodation Program (RAAP), with a $1 million contribution from the Shire of Leonora.
As stated by Regional Development; Seniors and Ageing Minister Don Punch:
"This is an exciting project not only for Leonora but the Northern Goldfields, providing a modern, independent living village for our senior residents.
"The village design will create a hub where both residents and community members can actively participate in community life, in a supported setting.
"The State Government's Regional Aged Accommodation Program has funded a range of projects across the State, which help meet the aged accommodation needs of regional Western Australia".
Comments attributed to Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent:
"This new facility will provide a safe and inclusive environment for residents to live independently, while interacting with each other and engaging with the community around them.
"The village will support not only Leonora residents but those in surrounding areas, such as Wiluna, Leinster, Laverton and Menzies, as well as connecting them with local wrap around services.
"I commend the Shire of Leonora for their hard work to bring this great project for Leonora and the Northern Goldfields to fruition."
