Melton City Council has welcomed the Victorian Government's announcement to remove four level crossings in the City of Melton and build a new Melton Station.
The Victorian Government also announced that if re-elected, it would extend the train platforms on the Melton line to accommodate 9-carriage Velocity trains, increasing capacity and frequency.
Level crossings at Coburns Road, Exford Road and Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina will be removed by 2028, with works set to commence early next year.
The City of Melton is expected to grow from 185,000 residents today to nearly 500,000 over the next 30 years. Continued, long-term public transport investment is vital to support the exponential growth being experienced.
City of Melton Mayor Cr Goran Kesic:
"We are delighted with the Victorian Government's announcement to remove four level crossings and build a new Melton Station, and their commitment, if re-elected, to improve the Melton rail line.
"Council has advocated strongly for the removal of these dangerous level crossings, which are getting more and more congested as our community continues to grow. "This is great news for our residents - removing the level crossings will reduce travel times, improve traffic flow and make the area safer for all road users.
"With over 70 per cent of our workforce leaving the city every day to access jobs, these projects will help get residents to where they need to go sooner.
