Libraries Extend Hours to Serve Communities

Tasmanian Government

Libraries Tasmania will extend opening hours at some libraries across Tasmania to better suit the needs of the community.

As part of these changes, there will be no reductions to any library opening hours and no changes to services.

The changes include opening on Saturday at Kinimathatakinta/George Town Library, Smithton Library and New Norfolk Library.

Launceston Library and Hobart Library will open on Sunday.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said libraries are the lifeblood of our communities.

"We know how important libraries are to our regional communities, and we've listened to community feedback to inform these decisions," Minister Palmer said.

"These changes are all about better suiting community needs, so people can access the library more often and when it suits them best.

"An important part of the Tasmanian Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is about developing stronger communities and enhancing our regions."

The new hours will start from Monday 3 February 2025.

The community was invited to provide feedback on the proposed opening hours earlier this year.
