Cessnock Library will host a special NAIDOC Week talk with renowned Wonnarua elder and teacher of Aboriginal culture, Uncle Warren Taggart, on Thursday 11 July, from 5:30-6:45pm.
Uncle Warren will share insights from his book, "Spirit of Place: Aboriginal Sites of the Hunter Region."
This captivating book explores the cultural significance of important Aboriginal sites across a vast section of Country.
In his talk, Uncle Warren will delve into his personal cultural journey, recounting conversations with his father and his rediscovery of his Country through its powerful imagery and significant sites, and weave stories of the land, its art, and the profound importance of the Dreaming, drawing from the knowledge passed down through generations.
"This country doesn't have boundaries, but has ridgelines, rivers and different languages to give a sense of place," said Uncle Warren.
"A traditional belief is that we all come from the earth and will return to the earth, our mother. Country is in my blood, in my heart and I just love it."
Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming event at Cessnock Library.
"This talk is an exceptional opportunity to learn from a respected elder and gain invaluable insights into the rich Aboriginal history and heritage of the Hunter region," said Clr Suvaal.
