The Mildura Library has just expanded its offering to include a whole host of every-day items you might not normally associate with your local library.
Mildura Mayor Helen Healy was on hand to officially launch Library of Things today, transforming the Mildura Library into a hub of shared resources for the community.
The Library of Things (LoT) extends the library's collection to include items such as small garden tools, sensory toys, cake moulds and even a sewing machine, which residents can borrow for up two weeks with a LoT membership.
Cr Healy said the concept was yet another way Mildura Rural City Council Libraries was broadening its services to the community.
"This is a fantastic initiative that provides numerous benefits for our community," the Mayor said.
"It means LoT members can access appliances they might not otherwise be able to afford, they can try out an item before deciding to buy, or perhaps they have an appliance at home that will be out of action for an extended period due to repairs – rather than simply throwing it out they can borrow a similar item to hold them over.
"These are just a few of the benefits, which in turn save residents money, reduce waste and encourage sustainable usage.
"And of course, while they're visiting the library they might find something else of interest in the ever-expanding collection offered by our library team."
LoT memberships are available to people 18 and over, allowing them to borrow up to two items at a time for two weeks.
Members are able to select items from the new LoT display at the Mildura Library, or place holds on items from the Library's online catalogue. Visit www.mildura.vic.gov.au/LoT
