Library To Host 'Words Grow Minds' Community Days

Families with children under five are invited to free community fun days hosted by the Mount Gambier Library in October to celebrate the Words Grow Minds campaign.

The events will be held from 10:00am to 1:00pm on Friday 11 October at AF Sutton Memorial Park, and Friday 18 October 2024 at Melaleuca Reserve. With support from the Libraries Board of South Australia, the community days will offer a range of activities suited to children under five to support the campaign.

"We are excited to host a range of community services and provide activities designed to nurture young minds through play," Mount Gambier Library Team Leader Children and Youth Services Erin Jones said.

"This state-wide campaign highlights how important early literacy is, and we are looking forward to engaging with families through ideas and resources relating to the campaign calls to action of talk, play, read and sing."

Activities at the events will include a pop-up library, play group, art play, giant games, making your own musical instrument, and more. There will also be a free barbeque lunch and a giveaway of literacy resources for families in attendance. There will also be an opportunity to speak to local service providers about resources and services available in Mount Gambier.

"Children will have the chance to explore, imagine, and play in a safe and creative environment, and we aim to help families understand ways in which they can support early literacy development for their children," Mrs Jones said.

"There will be something for every little one to enjoy and we hope to see you there."
