Our Council lifeguards have experienced yet another busy patrol season according to the end-of-season report.
Last season our lifeguards saw a 13 per cent increase in people using our beaches, about 357,000 people in all, due to relaxed COVID-19 restrictions and good weather in late summer and autumn.
More people meant more work with a jump in the workload with 105 rescues (up 62%) and 8425 preventative actions (up 34%).
Our lifeguards operated a total of 421 patrol days in all over the season.
Seven Mile Beach remains the most patronised, in front of Surf Beach with Jones and Werri beaches the least patronised.
A disappointing result from the season is the six rescues performed by lifeguards at the southern end of Bombo over the season.
South Bombo is a popular destination for nearby residents and for visitors as it is close to entrance to Kiama.
However, it is one of our most unsafe stretches of coast.
Council has undertaken an independent service review of high-risk beach areas, and we are assessing risk minimisation and strategies for next season.
