The ACT Government is partnering with the Australian Government and Canberra Metro to deliver the next stage of light rail in our city centre.
Now that the raising London Circuit project is entering its final stages – construction will start on light rail to Commonwealth Park from February 2025.
With our city expected to grow to more than 780,000 people by 2060 it's important we build this transport infrastructure to avoid the future traffic congestion so many other cities face.
This is a once in a generation asset for Canberra that will support the continued growth of the city, including the delivery of more housing, new public spaces and better multi-use precincts in our city centre.
The next stage of construction will expand light rail with three new stops at Edinburgh Avenue, City South and Commonwealth Park.
Light rail and the completion of raising London Circuit will transform the southern end of our city to a place that is welcoming and accessible to residents, tourists, commuters and businesses.
In 2028, workers, residents and visitors to the City Centre will be able to easily access City West, the ANU, New Acton, Commonwealth Park and Lake Burley Griffin.
This information serves as an early prompt to Canberrans about significant construction work starting on the project.
We are committed to providing the community with early and regular communications about the staged delivery of light rail.
From January 2025
A new construction compound will be established on the corner of London Circuit and Constitution Avenue in the current City Hill car park, this is in addition to those already established at Acton Waterfront and in City West.
From February 2025
From early February our delivery partner, Canberra Metro, will commence construction activity on London Circuit and Commonwealth Avenue.
Site establishment will be carried out under the Parkes Way bridge to aid future works and utilities work will be undertaken south of the lake at King Edward Terrace.
As part of the start of construction Canberrans can expect to see:
- fencing installed around London Circuit west, between Northbourne Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue
- the removal of existing street assets on London Circuit in readiness for construction, including bike racks, water fountains, park benches, light poles and public art
- the removal of some trees on London Circuit west and Commonwealth Avenue
- utilities in the ground starting to be removed and relocated.
Construction will see sections of London Circuit west closed to motorists and on-road cyclists between Northbourne Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue. Parts of London circuit will be re-opened as they are completed to maintain the local access through the area.
Access will be maintained to businesses along London Circuit and signage will be in place to assist customers, visitors and residents to navigate the area.
More details on traffic movements and construction staging will be available early in the new year.
Light rail to Commonwealth Park is a joint investment by the Australian and ACT Governments.
