The ACT Government is partnering with the Australian Government and Canberra Metro to deliver the next stage of light rail in our city centre.
Stage 2A City to Commonwealth Park will include three new stops at Edinburgh Avenue, City South and Commonwealth Park.
In 2028, workers, residents and visitors to the city centre will be able to catch a light rail service to easily access City West, the ANU, New Acton, Commonwealth Park and Lake Burley Griffin.
This project will transform the southern end of our city to a place that is welcoming and accessible to residents, tourists, commuters and businesses.
With the Raising London Circuit project entering its final stages, major site setup for light rail to Commonwealth Park will begin on London Circuit from 5 February 2025.
From this date the entire western side of London Circuit will close to regular traffic with the exception of some movement from West Row, through London Circuit, to Knowles Place onto Edinburgh Avenue.
Canberrans can expect to see the following additional changes on London Circuit, Commonwealth Avenue, Parkes Way and King Edward Terrace during February:
- the closure of London Circuit west, between Northbourne and Edinburgh Avenues to motorists and on-road cyclists, with fencing installed and in place until late 2027
- some changes to pedestrian pathways around London Circuit West and Northbourne Avenue
- lane closures on Commonwealth Avenue between Parkes Way Bridge and Commonwealth Bridge
- relocation of the bus stop on Commonwealth Avenue northbound (opposite Regatta Point)
- the removal of some trees on London Circuit west and Commonwealth Avenue
- the removal of street assets on London Circuit in readiness for construction, including bike racks, water fountains, park benches, light poles and public art
- utilities in the ground starting to be removed and relocated
- site establishment activities under Parkes Way bridge to prepare for the new rail bridge over Parkes Way
- construction activity along King Edward Terrace to prepare for upgrading of underground services.
As works are completed across the alignment, sections of London Circuit will be re-opened to support and maintain the local access through the area.
Access will be maintained to businesses along London Circuit and signage will be in place to assist customers, visitors and residents to navigate the area. Variable Message Signage (VMS) will also be in place around the city to alert approaching drivers about the closures.
People can access an online construction impacts map to view current information about road changes and other impacts relating to the construction of light rail and the Raising London Circuit project.
With major public and private infrastructure investment shaping our city centre for decades to come, the construction map will be updated with what work is occurring where and by which entity.
We have committed to providing the community with ongoing and regular updates about the status of the light rail project. This notification follows an early notification in December 2024.
