Literacy Kits Reach All Government Prep Classrooms

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has delivered nearly 800 sets of literacy resources – known as decodable readers – to all Government Prep classrooms for Term 1.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the readers help children to "sound out" the words, rather than guess, improving their phonics skills and reading.

"In a further step to supercharge literacy, decodable readers will also be made available to Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms over the coming months. This will give students ample opportunities to practice the skills they learn through evidence-based phonics instruction," Minister Palmer said.

"Our Government is supporting transformational change to ensure all students are engaged in consistent, structured, evidence-based literacy learning throughout their years of school, and we've committed to supercharging what we're doing in this space.

"These decodable readers are fantastic resources that will support students to develop and refine their foundational reading skills.

"Importantly, we are helping reduce the load on a classroom teachers, by providing both curriculum support and the classroom-ready resources needed to teach structured literacy.

"As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're investing $800,000 to ensure decodable readers are available in all schools, libraries and mobile libraries.

"Our Government is absolutely committed to staying the course on Lifting Literacy, and all students in the early years in our Government schools are already learning to read through evidence-based phonics instruction."
