Liverpool achieves highest ever place in Complete University Guide 2023

The University has been ranked 21st in the 2023 Complete University Guide (CUG), representing an improvement of nine places on last year and the University's highest ever position in the table. Previously, the University's highest placement in the rankings was 28th in 2020.

The table features 10 indicators including student satisfaction, research quality, grades and graduate prospects in order to compare 130 UK Higher Education institutions.

The University improved significantly in the Facilities Spend metric, with a climb of 39 places, followed by an 18 place increase in rank for Student Satisfaction. The highest ranking area of the table is Academic Services Spend, where the University is 13th overall. In total, improvements were recorded in seven of the 10 indicators.

The research indicators, which measure both quality and intensity, reflect performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The combined score for these two indicators ranks Liverpool 22nd, a climb of 13 places compared to the 2022 table.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Janet Beer said: "I am delighted to see such a significant improvement in our position, reflecting the hard work of staff and, indeed, our students, who are achieving outstanding outcomes. Following on from the great results we achieved in the REF, this news will give us all one more reason to be proud of the University and will support our ambitions to attract the best staff and students from the UK and overseas."

In separate listings covering 70 subjects, Liverpool is ranked within the top 10 providers in five areas; Optometry, Ophthalmics and Orthoptics (2nd of 15), Physiotherapy (4th of 46), Veterinary Medicine (4th of 10), Counselling, Psychotherapy and Occupational Therapy (4th of 53) and Medical Technology and Bioengineering (8th of 45).
