The University of Liverpool's Enterprise Team has released its 2023-2024 Annual Report, highlighting remarkable progress in supporting the commercialisation of research.
The University is committed to driving the transfer of technology generated from its innovative research, investing in academic founders to establish spin-out companies and license novel technologies that create global impact.
This year's report highlights a period of significant achievement, driven by a renewed strategic focus and increased investment in resources and initiatives designed to foster a vibrant entrepreneurial culture.
The report highlights key activities across the University in support of the Liverpool 2031 vision, showcasing notable achievements, providing case studies of some of University spin-out ventures, and outlining strategies for future growth.
These efforts have led to:
- 24 spin-outs supported iover the last six years
- £23 million + in intellectual property (IP) related income to the University since 2018 (HE-BCI 2023/24)
- £2.7 million in intellectual property (IP) related income to the University (HE-BCI 2023/24)
- £8.9 million industry, grant and translational funding secured for projects in the pipeline (2023/24)
- 131 jobs created (HE-BCI in 2023/24).
The University has committed a total of £5.6 million in Enterprise Investment Funding (EIF) since 2018. This has de-risked technology in the pipeline and leveraged a further £28 million of investment, industry and grant funding into our spin-out companies and the University.
This level of progress in IP and Commercialisation was recognised in Research England's Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF4) *, where the University now sits in the highest quintile amongst the country's leading universities for knowledge exchange.
Professor Anthony Hollander, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research & Impact and Chair of the University's Enterprise Board, said: "Over the past year, we've made impressive progress in executing our enterprise strategy, with visible benefits from our investments in capabilities and partnerships to support spin-out growth. Our ambition is to build on these successes, working together to position the University at the forefront of UK innovation. This report recognises the collective effort of individuals, departments, and external partners."
