Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a focus on strengthening the science and technology (S&T) capabilities between the two entities.
Specifically, the work is proposed in the areas of biotechnology, critical raw materials, materials for energy storage and conversion, structural and fusion energy materials and quantum information systems.
The MOU was made official during a signing and collaboration meeting at LLNL on Oct. 1.
Deputy Director for Science and Technology Pat Falcone said the MOU expands Lab's S&T collaboration with the Finnish government as part of a focused set of strategic international partnerships.
"This memorandum of understanding with VTT reaffirms the importance of international partnerships in advancing scientific and technological innovation," Falcone said. "This partnership between LLNL and VTT Finland is a true testament in our commitment in fostering strong collaborations to address global challenges."
According to the MOU, the work conducted between LLNL and VTT will advance critical S&T capabilities of NNSA in support of the Lab's broad mission for the nation and strengthen ties with a strategic global partner in support of the US government's wider interest in aligning with NATO allies.
Materials Science Division Leader Ibo Matthews said the work outlined in the MOU builds on the already strong and accelerating ties between the two nations that is both of strategic and technological interest.
"This MOU helps expand our S&T collaboration with the Finnish government," said Matthews. "The work proposed under the MOU is consistent with the long-term goals and objectives of the Department of Energy in addressing energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions."
VTT, one of Europe's leading research institutions, is owned by the Finnish state. VTT helps advance the utilization and commercialization of research and technology in commerce and society.
