Griffith Regional Art Gallery is proudly hosting a new solo exhibition by Riverina based Artist, Sophie Chauncy. This is the first time Ms Chauncy has had a solo exhibition at the Gallery.
Growing up in the MIA district, Ms Chauncy calls both Coleambally and Darlington Point home. Now based on a Morundah property on the Yanco Creek, this has developed her affinity with the Riverina landscape, its flora, fauna and the elemental nuances that define its rugged beauty.
Ms Chauncy is passionate about thriving landscapes and wildlife conservation.
"In recent years, my interest has been to document the ecosystems within the Riverina, drawing attention to biodiversity and at-risk animal and birdlife populations through mixed media," she said.
Ms Chauncy studied Visual Arts at the National Art School in Sydney and the University of Wollongong. In recent years, as part of the Regional Arts Development (RAD) Program, she undertook a 4-week artist residency in the E3 Space at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. Another artist residency in outback Western Australia took her to an old sheep and cattle station which extended her research into agriculture and biodiversity. From this experience, two solo exhibitions were inspired. 'Ocean to Outback' at ROR Space in Griffith and more recently, 'Nurture' at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.
"I want to reveal both the energy and beauty of the MIA specifically and rural Australian bushland more broadly. My paintings document the blissful energy of the Australian bush and hang as a reminder to nurture our unique environment. I hope I can bring this energy onto your walls as well," Ms Chauncy said.
Sophie Chauncy: Trails will open at 6pm Friday 14 June 2024. All are welcome to attend and entry is free. The exhibition will run from Saturday 15 June until Sunday 4 August.
