Mount Gambier local Wayne Richardson will launch his novel Thomases' Costumery at Mount Gambier Library on Thursday 24 October at 7:00pm.
Partially set in Mount Gambier across multiple time periods, the book explores the complex relationships between its characters as they navigate time travel, hidden secrets, and the weight of legacy.
"Thomases' Costumery is an action filled, humorous, and thought-provoking adventure story and it's always a privilege to be able to support local talent," Manager Library and Community Development Georgina Davison.
"The book masterfully balances the tension between duty and desire, all while injecting humour and heart into the journey. We can't wait to see how it inspires and captivates its audience."
Thomases' Costumery begins in 2103, when the Thomas brothers' invention-a cabinet that creates perfect replicas of historical costumes-has an unexpected feature: it also transports people back in time. When a customer is accidentally sent to 1876, the brothers cover up the incident and hide the machine.
Fast forward to 2117, Detective David Thomas and his partner Jen, investigating a burglary, uncover the long-hidden cabinet. During a struggle, the burglars escape into the machine, aiming to alter history. David follows them, only to be stranded in first-century Galilee. Now, David must find a way back, stop the criminals, and prevent a paradox that could erase his family from history.
"If you were going to think about Thomases' Costumery as a mash up of movies turned into a book it would be somewhat like combining an Indiana Jones adventure with Back to the Future but using the cast of the iconic Australian film The Castle to fill many of the leading roles," Wayne said.
After a long career as a forestry research scientist and later as a career firefighter, Wayne retired in 2021 to focus on his two passions: writing and volunteering.
"With years of experience writing scientific papers and training firefighters, I now find great joy in crafting thought-provoking adventure stories and hope readers will enjoy the journey."
All profits from book sales will go to the Compton CFS Brigade to assist in the purchase of equipment and facility upgrades to the station.
"I think it's only fair that proceeds from the book go back to a volunteer brigade who already contribute so much to others without asking anything in return," Wayne said.
