Nominations for the extraordinary local government elections on October 17 open today, prompting Local Government Minister David Templeman to issue a call for quality candidates to put their names forward and for the community to seriously consider who will be best placed to represent their interests going forward.
Elections for the City of Perth, the Town of Port Hedland and the Shire of Perenjori offer the local communities a chance for a fresh start and quality representation.
Each of the three local governments are currently governed by Commissioners, which were put in place due to failures in governance.
People with an interest in representing their community are urged to nominate, particularly people from diverse backgrounds that can bring a fresh outlook to the table.
As stated by Local Government Minister David Templeman:
"Elections are a wonderful chance for local communities to make a fresh start.
"I urge all community members to seriously consider the candidates that are nominating to ensure that they elect the right people to represent them.
"I also encourage everyone with an interest in the future of their community to nominate. If we want to have quality local government, we need quality candidates.
"And lastly, I want people to get out and vote. It is vitally important that people take this opportunity to have a say in how their local government is run."
