A new series of business and leadership workshops is taking a unique approach to improving workforce and talent retention, by providing advice on the connection between mental health and business success.
The Local Leaders Lunch series is delivered by Advance Rockhampton, the Institute of Managers and Leaders and Headspace Rockhampton. Across three workshops (14th March, 6th June and 12th September) leaders within Rockhampton's business community will be given tools to identify and respond to mental health challenges in the workplace and how to deal with the stress that can come with running a business.
Worksafe Queensland data has found absenteeism is 3 times higher in workplaces perceived as 'mentally unhealthy', which can cause a significant impact on the overall success of a business and take a personal toll on staff.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said a positive and supportive work environment is critical for the success of a business.
"When discussing strategies to improve employment outcomes, maintain local talent and reduce staff turnover, the basics can sometimes be overlooked – employees don't stay in workplaces where they're unhappy or unsupported," Mayor Williams said.
"Workplaces can be stressful, but through the Local Leaders Lunches we're showing business leaders how they can support staff going through a rough period by creating a mentally healthy workplace, and in turn ensuring those leaders have their own mechanisms to deal with the challenges that come with running a business.
"Tackling the issue of mental health and encouraging open dialogue is one way Advance Rockhampton is creating a resilient and stable workforce. The team also hosts industry engagements, collaborates with employment and job agencies and sits on a number a number of working groups establishing employment pathways.
"By addressing workforce retention through programs such as the Local Leaders Lunch, we're helping to keep the brightest minds in the Rockhampton Region."
The first workshop 'Mental Health and the Workplace' included a Mental Health 101 presentation from Headspace Rockhampton, discussion on the powerful link between mental health and leadership with Scott Martin from the Institute of Managers and Leaders, a 'fireside chat' with the two speakers, and information on business assistance available through Advance Rockhampton.
headspace Rockhampton Youth Engagement and Education Officer, Cherry Medlin, said business leaders play a key role in fostering a mentally healthy workplace, particularly for young employees navigating the early stages of their careers.
"Employees thrive in workplaces where they feel supported, valued, and mentally well. Employers have a responsibility to create environments that not only ensure physical safety but also prioritise psychosocial safety as well," Ms Medlin said.
"Today's Mental Health 101 presentation provides leaders with foundational strategies for managing psychosocial risks and the insights needed to safeguard their own wellbeing in the dynamic landscape of leadership."
Institute of Managers and Leaders General Manager Leader, Development and Membership, Scott Martin, said there is a strong link between supportive leaders and high-functioning workplaces.
"Leadership is a lot more than ensuring day-to-day tasks are completed. If your team is disorganised, unhappy or overly stressed, your business simply won't achieve its maximum potential," Mr Martin said.
"The best leaders are those who empower and support their teams, and programs like the Local Leaders Lunch are a simple and effective way to improve staff cohesion – and in turn reduce turnover."
Advance Rockhampton Economic Development Manager, Wade Clark, said the agency provides a range of support measures for businesses in the region.
"There's no doubt that running a business can be tough, but Advance Rockhampton is here to help you achieve your goals," Mr Clark said.
"Whether it's through our series of free workshops, programs like the Prosperous Precincts Grant, assistance with business connections and planning or simply being there to listen–we want to see local businesses thrive, with strong leaders at the helm."
