Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman is proud to celebrate Queensland's first integrated Endocrine and Diabetes Service in Logan (LEADS) has been awarded the state's only Diabetes Centre of Excellence (COE).
The LEADS team provides comprehensive, high-level care to patients with endocrine disorders and diabetes in a cutting-edge facility close to Logan Hospital.
The team includes highly skilled and experienced endocrinologists, advanced trainees, nurse practitioners, clinical trial co-ordinators, diabetes educators, nurse navigators, dietitians, podiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.
Early this year the service broke more new ground in healthcare, beginning an Australian-first Ramadan clinic after identifying that a significant portion of the Muslim community with diabetes was unable to safely fast during the holy month.
The COE award is in recognition of the highest standard of accreditation for diabetes care in Australia and is awarded by the National Association Diabetes Centres.
Standards are met across several domains including service delivery, education, national influence, research and practice, policy development and guidance.
Accreditation as a Centre of Excellence is awarded for a period of four years.
As stated by Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman
"I'm thrilled for Dr Puri and the team who have done a wonderful job supporting hundreds of locals here in Logan.
"It is an outstanding achievement to be awarded Queensland's only Diabetes Centre of Excellence, particularly after only 18 months of providing this care.
"As the Minister for Health and local Member for Waterford, I couldn't be prouder of everyone involved in establishing this worldclass service and that it is right here in Logan.
"The service has truly led the way in providing innovative, comprehensive care for people living with diabetes."
As stated by Clinical Director Doctor Gaurav Puri
"LEADS has already benefitted thousands of people and this service model is now a blueprint for integrated community services for other hospital and health services across the state.
"We have really led the way in enabling patients to access the newest, most up-to-date research treatments, and be monitored more closely and comprehensively than those receiving standard treatments.
"We are able to find better ways to prevent, detect or treat diseases while giving patients access to new interventions.
"There are currently six Centres of Excellence, and this award not only makes LEADS the seventh Centre of Excellence in Australia but also the first for Queensland.
"When I first shared this vision, I said in five years we will achieve Centre of Excellence status. We've done it in half that time and the entire team is humbled by this honour.
"It's amazing to see what can be achieved by a team of people who have a shared vision.
"Success is never an accident, and this achievement is a demonstration that the summit of success is not reached in a single leap, but in a series of determined steps."
