Logan City Council initiatives to improve the health of our waterways and restore native riverbank vegetation are paying dividends.
The initiatives were delivered through three significant over-arching programs - Logan Rivers and Wetlands Recovery Plan 2014-2024 and the two 50-year (2017-2067) Visions for the Logan and Albert rivers.
The programs extend across a number of local tributaries including Scrubby Creek, Slacks Creek, Windaroo Creek, Belivah Creek, Crewes Creek and Upper Oxley Creek (which feeds into the Brisbane River).
This work not only ensures healthier and cleaner waterways for the Logan community, it also improves water quality downstream and ultimately results in less sediment flowing into southern Moreton Bay.
The benefits of recent work by Council is confirmed in the latest annual report card issued by Healthy Land and Water (HLW).
The independent organisation that monitors 312 fresh and salt waterways across the state reported: "The Logan (C to C+) and Albert (low B- to high B-) catchments have improved consistently over the past two years, underpinned by improvements in freshwater condition."
City Planning, Economic Development and Environment Committee Chair, Deputy Mayor Jon Raven, said improvements to the health of local waterways takes time.
"Council has put a range of programs in place which are helping to restore natural environments and reduce sediment runoff into our rivers and creeks," Cr Raven said.
"Slowly but surely this is improving the health of the Logan and Albert rivers and this year's Healthy Land and Water report card supports that."
Council's efforts to improve the environment are multi-faceted and range from a state-of-the-art natural filtration system at Cedar Creek Environment Centre, through to pairing local schools with nearby waterways for river health programs.
Other key initiatives include:
- Logan River riverside park rehabilitation and revegetation at sites including Glen Park (Jimboomba), Malling Park (Waterford), Cochrane's Bridge Park (Cedar Grove), Newstead Park (Buccan), Lake Breeze Park (Loganholme) ,Wendt Park (Chambers Flat) Lions Park (Jimboomba) and Logan River Parklands (Beenleigh)
- Albert River riverside park rehabilitation and revegetation projects at sites including Wolffdene South Reserve (Wolffdene) and Luscombe Park (Wolffdene)
- Logan River monthly clean-ups of floating and bank rubbish and Albert River litter management program
- Logan and Albert Fish Habitat Enhancement Plan which will improve fish habitats and enhance fish movement
- Sustainable Fishing campaign to improve fish health and fish populations
- Partnering with riverside private landholders through Land for Wildlife and Voluntary Restoration Agreements
