Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Station Street CBD car park is about to undergo some major reconfiguration works to make way for a housing affordability multi-storey development.
The Station Street car park will undergo the removal of a significant number of car parks in the southeast area of the car park over the weekend of Saturday 1 March and Sunday 2 March 2025.
These soon-to-be removed car parks occupy the land purchased from Council back in 2022 by the Brisbane Housing Company (BHC), to build a 75-unit apartment complex with a mixture of social and affordable housing options.
Although the Station Street car park will downsize, recent monitoring shows the southeast area of the car park, often only used between 25-45% of capacity and never reached over 85% of capacity.
TRC Portfolio and spokesperson for Transport and Drainage Planning Cr Trevor Manteufel said the upcoming changes were necessary and exciting because of the widespread benefit they will have on the community.
"We don't expect the downsizing of the car park to have a significant effect on the community. However, we do know residents have been asking for more housing options for quite some time," said Cr Manteufel.
"Council is pleased to be contributing towards providing affordable housing options for our community. We are delighted to have the chance to alleviate some of the pressure residents are feeling because of the cost-of-living crisis."
"This is a step in the right direction for the future of our Region."
The location for the BHC multi-storey development was chosen due to its proximity to amenities and public transport.
During the weekend of the car park construction works, TRC advises residents should avoid the Station Street car park and choose to park in one of the other off-street (or on-street) car park options around the CBD area. The construction of BHC's multi-storey building will be constructed and managed solely by BHC.
TRC will be placing signs at the Station Street car park to inform the community of the upcoming changes.
Cr Manteufel thanked everyone involved in the delivery of this project for their efforts and thanked the community for their patience whilst the upcoming works were being undertaken.
