Major Funding Boost Fuels WA Medical Research

  • $3.5 million in new grant opportunities to be awarded to WA researchers
  • Co-funded by the FHRI Fund and the Hospital Research Foundation Group
  • Further funding opportunities to be announced at the next FHRI Fund Open Day

The Cook Government has reinforced its commitment to improving health outcomes for Western Australians with a $3.5 million co-funding partnership with The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF) Group.

Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson said the funding partnership would support WA researchers in addressing health challenges across the State. The State Government's $1.75 million contribution is being provided through the groundbreaking Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund.

The unique co-funding partnership will enable two key funding opportunities to support local medical researchers. These include the Preventative Health Fellowship and the Innovations in Personalised Medicine Program.

The Preventative Health Fellowship supports early to mid-career researchers to improve health outcomes for priority populations, including regional and remote communities, Aboriginal populations and culturally diverse communities.

The Innovations in Personalised Medicine Program will provide grants to WA researchers to advance precision treatments for cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative conditions.

Since the FHRI Fund was established in 2020, approximately $185 million in grants have been awarded to more than 627 recipients to support health and medical research and innovation in WA. Over the next four years a further $250 million is available to fund more programs and initiatives.

Further details about these initiatives and other new funding opportunities will be shared at the FHRI Fund Open Day in December.
