In time for Christmas, and for the first time in more than two years, both lanes of Moss Vale Road on the South Coast are now open after extensive repair work was completed to restore full traffic access.
In 2024 more than $6 million was invested by the Albanese and Minns Governments, under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), to repair landslips on the Barrengarry and Cambewarra mountains.
Since 2022 a total of 37 landslip sites have been repaired on Moss Vale Road, with a further 13 sites set for repair.
The landslip damage was caused by a series of unprecedented natural disaster events that brought record-breaking rainfall - up to six times the average rainfall totals, in some cases.
Transport for NSW crews and contractors have worked tirelessly to restore full traffic access in time for Christmas and will return in the new year for two to three weeks to complete shotcrete work at night on the reopened section. This work is expected to take place at night to minimise inconvenience.
Repair work at landslip sites in southern NSW has involved crews removing thousands of tonnes of landslip spoil (rocks, soil and vegetation), installing hundreds of soil nails and spraying thousands of square metres of concrete to stabilise the landslip areas and prevent further erosion in future severe weather events.
Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said:
"The Albanese Government, in partnership with the Minns Government, is committed to rebuilding essential infrastructure and supporting our regions, helping them emerge stronger and more resilient for the future."
"I'm thrilled that major road works on Moss Vale Road are finally complete, and full access has been restored for locals living on Cambewarra Mountain, in Kangaroo Valley and nearby villages.
"I have spent time in the community talking to local families, property owners and business owners, and I know how much this roadwork has disrupted their lives, so I'm really pleased to have delivered Disaster Recovery Funding for these crucial repairs.
"I hope people from right around the region will take a day trip to Kangaroo Valley and support those businesses that have been impacted.
"It's a fabulous village with great shopping, cafes and the drive up the mountain is so beautiful."
NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said:
"I want to thank work crews who have carried out these repairs. This work has been done under difficult conditions on steep and narrow sections of road, often with machinery operating in spaces narrower than a standard single car garage and with workers either suspended on platforms or abseiling ropes."
NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Disaster Recovery Janelle Saffin said:
"All over NSW, the Minns and Albanese Labor Governments are rebuilding roads damaged during disasters. These works on Moss Vale Road are another sign we're making significant progress in restoring access and connections for South Coast communities."
NSW Labor's spokesperson for Kiama Dr Sarah Kaine MLC said:
"It's good to see more repairs completed in the Kiama region. We are pleased to be getting on with the job of delivering better roads for local communities."
