A stunning hidden gem at the northern entry of the Western Downs is being revitalised to entice more people to visit the region and encourage locals to explore their own backyard.
Western Downs Regional Council has completed the first stage of upgrade works at Waterloo Plain Environmental Park at Wandoan in partnership with the Queensland Government's COVID Works for Queensland program.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said the project was part of Council's strategy to enhance the recreational opportunities across the region.
"We are so excited to be delivering a revitalisation of Wandoan's Waterloo Plain Environmental Park which has been fast-tracked as part of Council's COVID-19 recovery package to secure and create jobs and boost our liveability," Cr McVeigh said.
"As part of the project, we have delivered a range of new features including a new picnic shelter and table, new gas barbeque, drinking fountain, new entry signage, significant landscaping and additional plants and trees, new footpath linkages and a new underground irrigation system for the grassed area.
"We have also delivered a fresh all-weather gravel pavement access road and RV parking areas to boost accessibility at the site.
"This is also a huge win for local jobs, with local contractors such as MKH Plant Hire used as part of the packages works."
Assistant Minister for Local Government Nikki Boyd said the Palaszczuk Government's COVID Works for Queensland program was delivering for the Western Downs.
"Queensland's plan for economic recovery has already begun, with the Western Downs benefiting from a $385,000 investment by the Palaszczuk Government through COVID Works for Queensland," Ms Boyd said.
"The Waterloo Plains Park Upgrade will bring an amazing public space to the community, with benefits starting before it opens with the 29 local jobs construction will deliver.
Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Events and Regional Promotion Councillor Kylie Bourne said Council was actively advancing the region as a tourist destination.
"The Western Downs is home to so many beautiful outdoor landscapes and friendly people and we're committed to investing in projects to raise our profile as a visitor destination and ultimately boost our local economy," Cr Bourne said.
"Waterloo Plain Environmental Park is a stunning recreational space that is much-loved in the local community, and these upgrades are about enhancing the facilities and enticing more people to visit Wandoan.
"It's the perfect spot to set up camp for a few days, marvel at the native wildlife, connect with family and friends, and be a part of our welcoming community, and I encourage everyone to stop in explore the area, as well as other fantastic tourist sites in Wandoan."
