A MAJOR overhaul of the Deakin Avenue and Twentieth Street intersection is set to improve driver safety, reducing the risk of fatal collisions and injuries at the site.
Works to upgrade the intersection, identified as a Blackspot, will include a Vehicle Activated Warning System, splitter island, pavement reconstruction and widening, drainage works, lighting, additional road signage and line-marking.
The $1.226 million project is fully funded through the Federal Government's Black Spot Program and will be delivered by B&S Earthworks.
Works are due to start on Monday 29 April, with traffic controls and road closures in place throughout the project, which is expected to be completed by mid-2024.
Councillor for Infrastructure and Assets Glenn Milne welcomed the Federal Government's support of the intersection upgrade, saying that once complete, the improvements would increase motorist safety and reduce the risk of fatal collisions.
"The crash history at this intersection demonstrated a pattern – namely that drivers were failing to give way, or were simply unaware the intersection existed," Cr Milne said.
"From 1 June 2016 to 30 June 2021, one fatal collision and seven injuries have occurred at the site, prompting the need to seek funding to improve its safety.
"The proposed works will not only alert drivers to the intersection but provide safer outcomes. They will also allow heavy vehicle traffic to easily negotiate the intersection, improving movement."
