Majority of schools in Mid-West expected to open in wake of Cyclone Seroja

  • Most schools have now been assessed by the Department of Finance
  • Western Power has advised that they will arrange for power to be supplied to four schools that are currently without power, so they can open for Term 2
  • A helpline is available for parents of affected schools that require advice or support relating to their child's education 
  • Forty-one schools in the Mid-West have now been cleared of cyclone damage, with most schools expected to open for the start of Term 2. 

    The Department of Finance has today cleared an additional three schools; however, these three schools remain without power.

    Western Power has advised that power will be supplied to four schools to enable them to open for students and staff.

    The Department of Education is currently exploring alternative locations for staff and students from Kalbarri District High School and Binnu Primary School to continue learning next week.

    The Department of Education is continuing to provide support to staff and families who have been affected by Cyclone Seroja. A team of school psychologists, chaplains and experienced collegiate principals have travelled to the Mid-West to provide hands-on support for the schools and communities affected.

    A Parent Helpline (1800 882 345 from 8am to 8pm) has also been set up for parents of affected schools that require advice or support relating to their child's education.

    "I'm pleased to announce that another three schools have been cleared of cyclone damage by the Department of Finance.

    "The Department of Education is working closely with Western Power and the Department of Finance to make sure the majority of schools can open for Term 2.
