The Lawler Labor Government is working to reduce the Territory's road toll and make our road network safer, right across the Territory.
Budget 2024 invests $2.3 billion in transport infrastructure, with $91.8 million invested for road safety initiatives. This includes $6.5 million for pedestrian road safety infrastructure, $1.67 million towards road safety education and awareness activities, and $2.76 million for DriveSafe, the Territory Government's driver licencing education program.
In an effort to make our roads safer, the Lawler Labor Government is reviewing street lighting infrastructure along the Stuart Highway, Bagot Road and McMillans Road in Darwin to improve road safety for pedestrians and drivers.
A consultancy tender has been out to market to conduct an investigation of current lighting infrastructure and provide recommendations for upgrades, including:
Stuart Highway - From the intersection of Bagot Road to Bombing Road, including the Bombing Road intersection.Bagot Road - From the intersection of Stuart Highway to the intersection of Trower Road, including both Trower Road & Snell Street intersections.McMillans Road - From the intersection of Bagot Road to the intersection of Vanderlin Drive, including the Vanderlin Drive Roundabout.
Over 68,000 vehicles use these main arterial roads daily.
These locations see significant pedestrian activity, with the Lawler Government committed to reducing the risk of death and injury on our roads, and to a long-term vision of zero road deaths and serious injuries.
The review is expected to commence late September 2024 and will take 12 weeks to complete, which will inform next steps.
