Man Charged After $200K Parramatta Fire Damage

A man has been charged after allegedly deliberately lighting a fire in Sydney's west last week.

About 2.15pm on Saturday (21 September 2024) emergency services were called to Eels Place, Parramatta, following reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews attended and extinguished the blaze, which destroyed two cars and three shipping containers and spread to a nearby garden.

Police attached to Parramatta Police Area Command attended the scene, where they established a crime scene and commenced enquiries into the incident.

The estimated value of the damage caused by the fire is believed to be approximately $200,000.

Following extensive inquiries, police attended a hotel on Clovelly Road, Clovelly, yesterday (Wednesday 25 September 2024) where a search warrant was executed and a crime scene was established, with assistance from detectives attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command.

A 38-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Maroubra Police Station.

He was charged with six offences – two counts of possess prohibited drug, intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread, dishonestly obtain property by deception, destroy or damage property and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.

The man was refused bail to appear before Waverley Local Court today (Thursday 26 September 2024).
