A Jordanian national is expected to face Parramatta Local Court today (6 April, 2025) charged with endangering the safety of a Sydney-bound aircraft and assaulting a member of the cabin crew.
AFP at Sydney Airport responded yesterday evening (5 April, 2025) to an airline request for police to meet a flight arriving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
It will be alleged a man, 46, attempted to open the rear emergency exit door of the aircraft during the flight.
The man was subsequently escorted to a seat in the middle of the aircraft by airline staff, however it is further alleged he then attempted to open the middle emergency exit door.
The man was then restrained by crew and passengers, during which he allegedly assaulted an airline staff member.
The man has been charged with:
Two counts of endangering the safety of an aircraft, contrary to section 22(1) of the Crimes (Aviation) Act 1991 (Cth); and
One count of assault crew of Division 3 aircraft, contrary to section 20A of the Crimes (Aviation) Act 1991 (Cth).
The offences each carry a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Davina Copelin said dangerous behaviour on aircraft will not be tolerated by police.
"The actions of this man could have had tragic consequences, and passengers and airplane staff shouldn't have to put up with unruly, violent, or dangerous behaviour on flights" Det. A/Supt. Copelin said.
"The AFP will not hesitate to take action against people who engage in criminal behaviour on airplanes, especially where this behaviour has the potential to endanger the safety of passengers, crew or the flight itself."
